UHW Inauguration Celebration

January 20, 2009 at 8am at our Oakland and Los Angeles offices (download information flyer)

Barack Obama's historic election gives working families a powerful new reason for hope. With a pro-worker President in the White House and stronger support in Congress we can help move America forward by reforming our healthcare system and passing the Employee Free Choice Act. We can rebuild America's economic strength and renew the American Dream, and make sure that all working people have the opportunity to share in a better future.

UHW members once again played a key role in Obama's victory, volunteering in other states, and making over 100,000 phone calls into key battleground states. But now that we've won, the hard work has really just begun. We must bring the same level of intensity we brought to the election back to our work sites and communities and continue organizing in support of the changes we want to see in Washington, and in California.

The California State Budget Crisis

November 25, 2008 - The Assembly and Senate held hearings today on a mid-year budget package proposal that included $8.1 billion in cuts and $8.1 billion in revenues. The proposal did not include any cuts to IHSS, nor did it include a hard spending cap proposal which would result in drastic cuts to education, health and human services as well as other programs. Republicans in the Assembly and Senate rejected the proposed revenue package so the budget vote failed. Responsibility for fixing California’s growing budget deficit will now go to the new class of legislators being sworn in on December 1st.

Governor Schwarzenegger proposes more Cuts to IHSS, Medi-Cal and other programs.

UHW Members help in Obama Victory

November 4, 2008 - Mark this down as a truly historic day for our country, for California and for our union. Electing Barack Obama the fi rst African-American president of the United States brings an exciting and hopeful future for generations to come.

“With a stronger progressive majority in Congress and a pro-worker, pro-healthcare president, we now have the opportunity to achieve so much for our members and for those we care for,” reacted UHW Pres. Sal Rosselli. “With hard work, we can accomplish meaningful healthcare reform, protections for workers to freely form a union without interference and so much more.”
